The Diabolical Dance: Look Again Festival, Aberdeen. Concrete Installation. March 2016

In 2016 I was awarded a commission by Look Again Arts Festival to create a concrete installation of pairs of shoes representing twenty three named women and one man who were recorded as dancing with the devil at the Mercat Cross at Halloween. They were accused, tried, found guilty, and burned as witches in Aberdeen in 1596. 'The Diabolical Dance' was displayed at the city Mercat Cross, near where many of them were burned to death. These cast and sculpted concrete shoes embody the accused, and the weight of concrete signifies the impossibility of defence against the accusations made against them. Their destiny was essentially set in stone the moment they were accused.
